The Company
"For a production company, Sony Pictures is the best model I can imagine. We are part of a big group, are supported by a strong parent company and can still work independently."
Christiane Ruff
Sony Pictures Film und Fernseh Produktions GmbH (SPFFP) – f.k.a. Columbia TriStar Film und Fernseh Produktions GmbH - in Huerth is one of the German subsidiaries of the U.S. film studio Sony Pictures Entertainment. SPFFP was founded in 1995, managing directors are Christiane Ruff and Martin Borowski. The team in Huerth consists of 35 full-time employees, but as many as 250 might be employed at any given time, subject to production volume. More than 1,000 hours of programming, have been produced so far.
SPFFP has become well-known for its sitcoms. Successful formats such as NIKOLA and DIE CAMPER have become long-running hits on German TV – in 2005 the ninth season of each of these series was produced. RITAS WELT (five seasons) was one of the most successful sitcoms ever.
This "comedy power" branched out to other genres. Apart from sketch-shows (SECHSERPACK, DAS BUERO, OHNE WORTE) SPFFP also produced personality comedy-shows and has thus become one of the biggest comedy producers in Germany.
THE GONG SHOW, THE NEWLYWED GAME and JEOPARDY! are the game show classics that have been brought to Germany by SPFFP.
However, since 2005 the drama genre also plays a vital part in SPFFP’s business. The drama series DIE FAMILIENANWAELTIN and POST MORTEM are being produced as well as various pilots.
Non-fiction productions are considered important, too. 100 episodes of DIE CASTING-AGENTUR were aired and the high-quality docu-series DIE KUCKELKORNS aired in January 2006.
Additional comedy and drama formats as well as non-fiction programs are in the development stage.
There are two more subsidiaries of Sony Pictures Entertainment in Germany, Sony Pictures Releasing GmbH in Berlin and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in Munich.
